How To Forecast And Shape Behavioral Patterns?

FindItMore | It is hard to understand changing behavior. We witness each day that people commit to doing something but then they quit in the middle of it. They make New Year resolutions and then they are unable to fulfill them. Gym memberships go unused, plans to eat less and save more, even if started will full determination, are never executed. Have you ever wondered, why does this happen? These are called behavioral patterns are tough to decipher completely. If you have a subscription to a quality ISP such as Spectrum Phone Service and internet, skim through all those blog posts and pieces about the behavioral patterns and all different ways that humans behave.

When it comes to the behavioral patterns and motivational factors, know that there are services and products that are effective in nudging you towards your goals. Whether it is about choosing healthy eating options, or developing habits to save more, or having to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle, or having a regular workout routine, so on and so forth. Experts have tried to create products and services to help people shape their behavioral patterns and accomplish their goals. But it is not as simple as that. And experts are realizing that too, that tackling with complex behavioral patterns and challenges is not easy. Let’s discuss that further.

Early Theories

Early theories implied that human personality is expressed in the physical appearance. One of the early approaches was Phrenology that revolved around the idea that personality can be assessed by rightly examining the bumps on the skulls. Phrenology was actually taken seriously in the Victorian Age, and experts promoted the use of it for self-knowledge and psychological insight. Even machines were invented that could help in skull analysis. Later on, Phrenology was discredited because it couldn’t validate various predictions in theory.

Somatology was another approach, that revolved around the idea determining people’s personalities through body types. One approach said that people with more fat and a rounder body/physique were more bold and assertive, while people who are thinner are introvert and intellectual. Later on, this approach was also discredited and proved futile in contemporary psychology.

Personality through Traits

Personality is essentially characterized according to traits that are enduring enough to influence our behavior through different situations. Personality traits like introversion, friendliness, honesty, conscientiousness, and helpfulness play a significant role in explaining consistencies and patterns in behavior. One of the most popular ways of figuring out personality traits is by running or administering various personality tests on people, particularly if they self-report about those traits. Psychologists are actually investigating hundreds and thousands of traits through this self-report traits approach. Different personality traits have different implications for human behavior. And through different sorts of research on personality traits, a psychological expert can forecast and predict a person’s behavior.

Situational Impacts on Personality

There are challenges associated with the trait approach because human psychology is quintessentially composed of various complex phenomena. It can never be defined completely in black and white. IT cannot have rigid boundaries and we need to understand this. We cannot forecast and predict human behavior 100 percent. Take the instance of the trait friendliness. Let’s just say that John is a friendly guy. He is friendly today and can be friendly tomorrow and the next week and so on. We can even go the extent of saying that in average and normal situations, John shows a friendly behavior. But you can be surprised if John’s friends claim that he is very friendly but his family doesn’t agree. This clash of opinions shows that the consistency of his friendliness is perhaps dependent on time, situation, and the right company. We come to the conclusion that traits are more in the analysis of experts than in the behaviors of the observed people. Natural tendencies and situational influences also play their part.

Shaping the Behavioral Patterns

When it comes to shaping a habit or behavior, counseling is one approach. But as mentioned earlier, human psyche and behavior are not as simple as that. Counselors can try and have all those effective sessions to change a particular habit or behavior, but no one can claim that it is going to be 100 percent flip. No one can claim that once counseled, a particular behavior cannot emerge again because it is humans that we are talking about here. It’s not Math that we are applying to them. Although, self-actualization and determination to change a particular behavior pattern or habit is an appreciated practice and help of counselors and experts should be sought.
